Our Accessibility Champion Spotlight this month is Tanya from Frankston & District Basketball Association!

Read on to hear about her experience with the Accessibility Champion Course and how she’s championing accessibility in her organisation.

Tanya has recently been overseeing the inaugural All Abilities Competition with her organisation, Frankston & District Basketball Association. The competition began with 6 teams of up to 6 players and ran over 19 weeks. Tanya noticed an increase in participants every week, showing the demand for accessible sport. The next season will begin on the 13th of October following the success of the first.

Tanya credits the Accessibility Champion Course for helping to demonstrate to all staff of the organisation how important inclusivity is and how it can be implemented.

The course

Tell us about your experience with the course.

“I was excited to do the accessibility course for myself and on behalf of FDBA. It was the first course I have seen that gives clubs and association the opportunity to be certified as an accessibility champion and that also resources that you can come back and refer to at any point after the course.”

What did you enjoy about it, and what did you find useful?

“I found the course to be efficient, easy to understand and helpful. This course spoke in plain English so even if its someone’s first time learning about disability and inclusion, they will be able to learn very quickly and make the necessary changes within their clubs.”

What accessibility changes have happened in the club throughout the last 12 months?

“Inclusion is at the forefront of everything we do, we make sure to look at all the programs we provide by seeing what barriers maybe present that would stop someone participating and how we can modify or adapt our program to better suit people’s needs. We have learnt that its important to ask people what they need rather than assuming it’s a one size fits all.”

Our Accessibility Champion Course is a free 2 hour course to help you and your organisation get started on your accessibility journey. It was designed in consultation with disabled athletes and is proudly supported by the Australian Sports Commission. For more information and to register, click here.
