Round up of the Inaugural 2016 Wheelchair Aussie Rules National Championships

Disability Sports Australia and the Australian Defence Force was proud to host the Inaugural 2016 Wheelchair Aussie Rules National Championships held at Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre in April.

It was a brilliant few days of competition. Some of the players had been playing for a few months, while some were just picking up the sport that weekend. Everyone said how much they enjoyed the competition, especially the RSL Veterans who despite coming last on the ladder, were having the most fun out of all the teams who attended. We even had an appearance by Ron Barassi, AFL Legend, who came and tossed the coin for the Bronze medal match.

In the end, it was South Australia who won the Championships, with Victoria taking Silver and Tasmania the Bronze.

Individual awards went to:

  • Best Back - Ben Hopping from Defence Force 1
  • Best Centre - Matt Gregory from South Australia
  • Best Forward - Brody Healy from South Australia
  • Most Valuable Player - Matt Gregory from South Australia
  • Spirit of the Game - Kevin Faulkner
